Is it possible to convey spirituality through art and material culture? How can art in the tradition-bound Church be renewed so that it appeals to, touches, and is understood by a contemporary audience?
These questions form the foundation of my Master’s project, which has its starting point in an artwork commission for the Kalmar New Pentecostal Church in Småland. The work also deals with the question of whether there is a need for symbolic and sacral environments as well within the Pentecostal movement – an environment traditionally hostile to pictures – and how, in such cases, this can be introduced into the church environment without violating the movement’s traditions and ideology.
My desire is to communicate the Christian message in a renewed way and, in this specific work, emphasize and illuminate the role and significance of the picture in the Pentecostal movement.
Är det möjligt att förmedla andlighet genom konst och materiell kultur? Hur förnyar man konsten inom den traditionsbundna kyrkan så att den tilltalar, berör och förstås av dagens moderna människa?
Denna frågeställning ligger till grund för mitt masterprojekt, som har sin utgångspunkt i ett utsmyckningsuppdrag för Kalmar nya Pingstkyrka i Småland. Arbetet behandlar också frågan om det finns ett behov av symbolik och sakrala miljöer också inom Pingströrelsen, en av tradition starkt bildfientlig miljö, och hur man i så fall för in detta i kyrkomiljön utan att bryta med rörelsens tradition och ideologi?
Min önskan är att kommunicera det kristna budskapet på ett förnyat sätt och i det här specifika arbetet lyfta fram och belysa bildens roll och betydelse inom Pingströrelsen.
