Ceramics and Glass

The Master’s group in Ceramics and Glass focuses on extending the field of art glass via a vital dialogue between material cultures. Through both existing within the material culture and acting as material culture while at the same time problematizing what this culture can be, applied art occupies a unique position. An interdisciplinary approach to practice and theory is used in this negotiation. Applied art as a discipline is a differentiated field, there is not one single applied art but several. And it is a strength that the students develop different approaches to their practice – it can look different, express different things, be undertaken in different places. Their works are intended to reconsider standpoints and help to formulate new questions in both their own fields and in our contemporary society as a whole.

For two years the students have been enhancing and probing their standpoints and works in a series of courses, projects, seminars and exhibitions. They work closely with the professor responsible for the subject and with each other to go more deeply and widely, problematize and create their individual Master’s projects. During their programme this year’s graduates have also worked closely with Eskilstuna Art Museum, its staff and its visitors. This cooperation culminated in the exhibition “Empire of Dirt” in the autumn of 2010. The questions that have unified the group concern things like performative applied art, theory based on practice, material culture that transcends traditional Swedish historical writing and how renewed working methods can expand future prospects. For two years I have had the privilege of following this unique group of students. Their works are important and it is with great pleasure and pride that I wish them the best of luck in all that lies ahead of them.

Mastergruppen Keramik och Glas fokuserar på att expandera konsthantverksfältet via en vital dialog mellan materiella kulturer. Genom att både befinna sig inom den materiella kulturen och verka som materiell kultur, samtidigt som det problematiserar vad denna kultur kan vara, intar konsthantverket en unik position. I denna förhandling används ett interdisciplinärt förhållningssätt till praktik och teori. Konsthantverk som disciplin är ett differentierat område, det finns inte ett konsthantverk utan flera. Och det är en styrka att studenterna utvecklar olika förhållningssätt till sin praktik – att den kan se olika ut, tala om olika saker, finnas på olika platser. Deras arbeten syftar till att kontinuerligt ompröva ställningstaganden och bidra till nya frågeställningar såväl inom det egna fältet som i vårt samtida samhälle i stort.

Studenterna har under två år fördjupat och prövat sina ställningstaganden och arbeten genom en rad kurser, projekt, seminarier och utställningar. Studenterna arbetar nära ämnesansvarig professor och med varandra med att fördjupa och bredda, problematisera och gestalta det individuella masterprojektet. Årets klass har också under utbildningen arbetat tätt samman med Eskilstuna Konstmuseum och dess personal och publik. Samarbetet utmynnade i utställningen ”Empire of Dirt” hösten 2010. Frågor som samlat gruppen rör sådant som performativt konsthantverk, praktikbaserad teori, materiell kultur bortom traditionell svensk historieskrivning och hur förnyade arbetsformer kan vidga framtidsutsikterna. Under två år har jag haft förmånen att följa denna unika grupp studenter. Deras arbeten är viktiga och det är med stor glädje och stolthet som jag önskar dem lycka till med allt de ska göra framöver.
