Textiles

The breadth of the Bachelor’s programme in textiles at Konstfack is unique and even though the body, space and politics are central for the 12 students’ graduate projects, we encounter here the works of deliberately individual practitioners rather than a clear trend or coherent theme. What they have in common is great commitment and an honest desire for new forms of discussion and designs.
Textile materials form an extremely concrete aspect of our world, around us, on us and often under us. They offer protection and consolation, they excite us and attract our attention.

There is often both psychological and social depth to the textile tradition and at the same time it sets the stage on which our identities can find physical friction, flourish and transform. Events in our world are reflected in the design of textile materials and textile technology enables the formulation of new possibilities.

In the exhibition of Bachelors’ projects old patterns are revived as remixes and sampled identities from the world of pixels translated through textiles for real life. The snow is white, crystal clear, and light is woven into the textiles where the friction of the cut also persuades the eye to make new use of the magical illumination of colour. Poetic defiance of gravity enables garments to rise and the ceiling finally takes revenge. The aesthetics of politics are challenged and textile protests and manifestos arouse hope of totally new approaches and renewed discussion of the human condition. Emotional ergonomics endows embraces with physical form and we grapple with sculptural shapes that are both subject and object. At the margin of a string of pearls we meet our dream of the fluttering curtains.

Bredden vid Konstfacks textila kandidatutbildning är unik, och även om kroppen, rummet och politiken är centrala för de 12 studenternas examensarbeten, är det mer individuellt utstakade praktiker vi möter än en tydlig trend eller röd tråd. Gemensamt är ett starkt engagemang och en uppriktig önskan om nya sorters samtal och former.

Textila material är ytterst påtagliga i vår värld, de är kring oss, på oss och ofta under oss. De skyddar, tröstar, gör oss upphetsade och uppmärksamma.

Den textila traditionen har både ett psykologiskt och socialt djup och bildar samtidigt den sceniska yta där våra identiteter kan finna fysisk friktion, frodas och omformas. Världens skeende återspeglas i det textila materialets utformning och genom textil teknik formuleras nya möjligheter.

I kandidatutställningen återvänder gamla mönster remixade och samplade identiteter från pixlarnas värld översätts genom textil till det verkliga livet. Snön är vit och kristallen klar och ljuset binds i textilen där också snittets friktion övertygar ögat att återvända till färgens magiska lyskraft. Poetiskt tyngdlagstrots får kläder att lyfta och taket får slutligen sin revansch. Politikens estetik utmanas och textila upprop och manifest ökar hoppet om helt nya infallsvinklar och förnyade samtal om människans villkor. Genom emotionell ergonomi får omfamningen fysisk form och vi brottas med skulpturala former som är både subjekt och objekt. Vid pärlbandets rand möter vi vår dröm om den fladdrande gardinen.
