Our appearance is often one of the first images other people judge us on. How we express ourselves is our way of strengthening our identity so that we fit in with society. In this project, I have studied the identities we create for ourselves on the internet. In virtual worlds and social media, identities no longer need to be built around bodies or contexts. On the internet, we have access to everything and relations can be established with anyone. Information travels and spreads in real time. Is the image we create of ourselves the person we become? Manuel Castells, in his book The Rise of the Network Society, writes that nowadays we form our purpose based on who we are or who we think we are, not based on what we do, as before.
Vårt yttre är oftast en av de första bilderna som andra människor bedömer oss utifrån. Hur vi uttrycker oss är vårt sätt att förstärka vår identitet så att vi passar in i samhället. I det här projektet har jag undersökt de identiteter som vi skapar åt oss själva på internet. I virtuella världar och sociala medier behöver man inte längre bygga sin identitet kring sin egen kropp eller sitt sammanhang. På internet har man tillgång till allt och man kan upprätta en relation med vem som helst. Information färdas och sprids i realtid. Är bilden vi skapar av oss själva den personen vi blir? Manuel Castells skriver i boken Nätverkssamhällets framväxt att vi människor idag organiserar vår mening utifrån vilka vi är eller tror oss vara, inte som förr utifrån vad vi sysslar med.
