What do you do if your apple pie lifts up off the table and floats away before you’re able to take a bite? How do you relate emotionally to foodstuff when it’s packed in cans and plastic bags as if this were a crisis situation? How can there be pleasure in food when your meal resembles purée or cat food?
Living conditions for astronauts are extremely stressful. You can feel your muscles atrophy, your immune system weaken, and you know you’re almost alone if an accident happens. Millions of crowns are invested in constructing a spaceship, but only a scanty amount for the emotional well-being of the crew. Mealtimes provide an opportunity to relieve stress, to recover energy, and to build up and strengthen the spirit among the crew.
My degree project reviews the astronauts’ food situation from an emotional and ergonomic perspective, with a focus on how utensils and packaging can improve the well-being of the individual and the group.
Vad gör du om äppelpajen lyfter från tallriken och svävar vidare innan du hunnit ta en tugga? Hur förhåller du dig känslomässigt till matvaror när de förpackas i konserver och plastpåsar som om det vore en krissituation? Hur finner man matglädje när maten liknar puréer och kattmat?
Levnadsförhållandena för astronauter är ytterst påfrestande. Man är medveten om att musklerna förtvinar, immunsystemet försvagas och att man är nästintill ensam om en olycka inträffar. Miljontals kronor investeras i att konstruera en rymdfarkost, men endast en sparsam summa på besättningens känslomässiga välbefinnande. Under en måltid ges tillfälle att koppla bort stress, återfå orken och bygga upp och stärka stämningen hos besättningen.
Mitt kandidatarbete ser över astronauternas matsituation ur ett känslomässigt och ergonomiskt perspektiv med fokus på hur utensilier och förpackningar kan förbättra individens och gruppens välbefinnande.
