The starting point for my work was the concept of ‘the sublime’, which describes an overwhelming experience of greatness that threatens to crush the self.
The experience of something greater resembles that which people seek in religion, and the sublime is a concept that throughout history has surfaced in times of great social and religious upheaval; times when people seek comfort in the experience of something greater than the self, outside of institutionalised religion.
Immanuel Kant is one of the philosophers that shaped our image of the sublime. He devoted his entire life to philosophy, and his thoughts revolutionized the entirety of Western thought. Despite this, he could not understand everything.
