My mother, my grandfather, and I traveled around Sweden to visit correctional institutions my grandfather had worked at. He worked as the warden at some institutions, and even in the National Prison and Probation Administration.
Hall and Härlanda were closed off, in contrast to several that were open institutions with forestry and agriculture.
Forty to fifty years ago, it was usual for the warden’s family to live in the institutions; thus my mother grew up in these places.
I made this trip with my mother and grandfather to visit the places that had been workplace, home, and institution – both for the inmates and my mother’s family.
During the trip we had a conversation about what it was like to be a family there. How did punishment, rules, morals, and honour influence the family? How did their viewpoints differ? What impressions did it make on them?
Neither my mother nor my grandfather had visited some of these institutions for many years.
Jag, mamma och morfar gjorde en resa genom Sverige för att besöka anstalter inom kriminalvården som min morfar arbetat på. Morfar har arbetat som anstaltschef och även i Kriminalvårdsstyrelsen.
Hall och Härlanda har varit slutna till skillnad från flertalet som varit öppna anstalter med skogs- och jordbruk.
För 40-50 år sen var det vanligt att anstaltschefens familj bodde på anstaltsområdet, min mamma har därför vuxit upp på dessa platser.
Den här resan gjorde jag med mamma och morfar för att besöka de platser som varit både arbetsplats, hem och institution – för intagna och för min mammas familj.
Under resan förde vi ett samtal om hur det var att vara en familj där. Hur har straff, regler, moral och heder påverkat familjen? Hur skiljer sig deras synvinklar? Hur har det präglat dem?
Flertalet av anstalterna har varken mamma eller morfar besökt på många många år.
